A visit to the "Boating Lake" Doncaster

Sandall Park Doncaster
(Boating Lake) as it was once known

When I was a youngster in the late 1940's and early 1950's my parents used to take me to what they called the "Boating Lake". With a flask packed and some sandwiches we used to catch the No 4 Wheatley Hills trolleybus from the top of Wentworth Road and travel to the turning circle at the Wheatley Hotel. We then walked about a quarter of a mile to Boating Lake and like all youngsters parents were pestered until a boat was hired. I confess though the railway came once I was a teenager whose attention was then turned in other directions, riding on a children's train was not then on my list, so this was a train I was never to ride on. Today neither can anyone else ride on a train or take a boat out as the railway was vandalised and removed some years ago. The boats have also gone as some of the teenagers wrecked them at night. However the park now has a friends group "Friends of Sandall Park" and as you will see below the park is now being well cared for. Maybe one day there may be a miniature  again, not sure about the boats. Click here for more photographs of the railway.

The main entrance to Sandall Park. The remains of the concrete base, the railings and gate for the now demolished boat house

The main area of the lake and the modern day children's play area make it a pleasant park to visit.

A walk around the perimeter of the park is 1.64 miles and no excuse along the way not use of the very latest additions the equipment for keeping fit. Theses were the easy ones that I and my wife Pat tried out.

The new access from Thorne Road and new bases for picnic tables. Whilst you can relax in the tranquil wild life pond which is separate to the lake or relax at the Sandall Park Café which has outside seating area. We do recommend that you park your motor bike in either of the two free car parks.

Why not visit the Friends of Sandall Park website by clicking onto the image above and find out more information about the park and the events that are held.
