This was supposed to be the day when work started on the remaining track edging and new platforms at the Thorne Central Station. The heavy rain started falling at about 4 am and never stopped until about 5 pm. Three to four inches of rain fell in that time over much of the North and especially South Yorkshire. Businesses and homes were flooded, the main railway network came to halt in and out of Sheffield, one of the worst effected areas as the rivers flooded and for us we have had to cancel a major working project. The ducks in the photograph were taking shelter from the rain. The park was possibly the safest place to be for them unlike their cousins who reside alongside the nearby River Don which is in full flood.
11 am Monday 25th June 2007 the flooding starts after 8 hours of rain
By 4.30 pm 25 June 2007 over half of the track circuit was flooded.
10 pm Tuesday 26th June 2007 The water recedes as the sun comes out.
By 11.00 am the water had receded enough for some work to be carried out, however instead of 30 - 40 volunteer helpers from a national bank helping out we were down to a rather reduced team of our members. We had ordered a skip for the occasion but this had to be cancelled. Unfortunately another date cannot be arranged for the bank workers to come again so this means it will now be a slow process to carry out the work over the next two months something that could have been carried out in two days.
12 noon Tuesday 26th June 2007 and just a short distance from Thorne the River Don is just starting to overflow its banks at Stainforth as the water struggles to get under the now closed road bridge to an already flooded Fishlake. Many of the people looking on are residents who live next to the river who have had to leave their homes.
