Left: Work underway by our members to put the first of the boards in place for the station area at the beginning of June 2007. Right: 25th June 2007 the day that the 25 volunteers from a national bank were due to complete the work in readiness for the concreting. This event had to be cancelled due to the track being flooded when 4 inches of rain fell.

The following day on June 26th 2007 the sun came out and most of the flood water had receded, an attempt was made to carry out some of the work ourselves in time for the July 2008 Summer Festival Event. It soon became apparent that we would be struggling to complete the work so the project was put onto hibernation until after the July event.

Bit by bit during 2008 further work was carried out to add the extra boards and limestone base. By the end of May 2008 the work was nearing completion in readiness for concreting.  Regrettably some of the bags of cement donated by Bramall Construction had gone off and with only four members available a decision was made to order ready mix cement.

Wednesday 4th June 2008. A 7.45 am start for our members in readiness for the concreting of the platform areas at the Thorne Central Station.

Above the first of the concrete comes down the shoot. Now the race starts to get the concreted and levelled. Already the concreted is being poured into the prepared new Platform 2.

Mick continues the levelling a race against time due to the warm sunshine including that of the new platform 2. Above right is the following day after a tea-time and evening of keeping a watch that no names or shall we say sign writing was engraved in the concrete that was almost now totally set.

There was some concrete left over for the crossing but the warmth of the sun made it that we could not concrete the outer track as by now the concrete had started setting. A job for us at a later date. On 8th June the platforms gleamed in the brilliant warm sunshine as they were used for the first train services using the newly concreted platforms for the first time.
We shall have to improve the layout of Platform to the right by putting in new concrete edging and ash felt or even concrete. Another visit by reedy-mix perhaps? There is still some other work to be carried out over the coming months including a permanent station sign made in metal.
